Let your food take a dip in Lake Assal. Located at the lowest geographical point in Africa, Assal is the world’s saltiest body of water, where sea salt pearls are naturally formed. Afar Salt harvests these pearls, which range in size from .04 inches to 1 inch. Also culled from the mineral-rich Red Sea, Afar Salt Pearls comes in four sizes: The Finest Pearl, ideal for sprinkling just before serving; Petite Pearl; Perfect Pearl; and the giant Mother Pearl, which can be shaved or grated onto a dish. Afar Salt is owned and operated by the Afar people, an African ethnic group living on the border of Djibouti and Ethiopia, with proceeds going toward development of their community. —Vanessa Facenda
