Not sure? Locavore, the New Oxford American Dictionary’s 2007 Word of the Year, means people who seek out food that is grown or produced within a 100-mile radius of where they reside. The locavore movement, started two years ago by a group of women in San Francisco, encourages consumers to buy from farmers' markets or even to grow or pick their own food, contending that fresh, local products are more nutritious and taste better. Locavores also urge against shopping in supermarkets since shipping food over long distances often requires more fuel for transportation.

Get inspired by checking out the series of Edible magazines, which cover local farmers, farmers’ markets and sustainable businesses in various cities or regions. Copies are available for free at some establishments in those areas or by subscription at ediblecommunities.com. -Denise Shoukas
