Are You a Locavore?
Learn the word of the year.
user ratingNot sure? Locavore, the New Oxford American Dictionary’s 2007 Word of the Year, means people who seek out food that is grown or produced within a 100-mile radius of where they reside. The locavore movement, started two years ago by a group of women in San Francisco, encourages consumers to buy from farmers' markets or even to grow or pick their own food, contending that fresh, local products are more nutritious and taste better. Locavores also urge against shopping in supermarkets since shipping food over long distances often requires more fuel for transportation.
