Belgium
Unforgettable mussels, frites, waffles, chocolate and beer.
user rating Belgium is a country divided by two cultures—the Flemish in the North and the Walloons in the South. When there, you’ll hear a few languages, ranging from French and Flemish to German and English. In the center of the country is the capital, Brussels, known as one of the most sophisticated, expensive and wonderful eating cities in Europe.
Countrywide, the food is delectable and similar to French cooking. Mussels are prepared in numerous savory ways and are typically served with frites. These French fries are available in paper cones from street vendors and are served with dipping sauces that range from mayonaisse to curry sauce. Famous Belgian waffles and endive abound as well, but it’s the finest chocolates that will drive you to distraction.
The national drink is beer and it’s not only is it savored while being sipped, it’s also used in cooking. There are more than 90 breweries producing at least 400 beers including familiar lagers and pilsners, such as Stella Artois and Hoegaarden, fruit beers, called Krieks, and specialties, like Gueuze, from Brussels.—Denise Shoukas
