Green tea oil has sprung up as a new alternative to typical olive oil, for cooking, baking and dressings, but it’s anything but new. Indigenous to China, emperors have been cooking with tea oil for thousands of years, supposedly for its nutritional and healthful value. Made from the seeds of the same plant family that produces green tea leaves, green tea oil is rich in antioxidants, as well as essential fatty acids (Omega 6 and 9) and vitamin E. Oila Green Tea Oil has a much higher smoke point than olive oil (488 degrees F versus olive oil’s 320 degrees), making it ideal—and safer—for high-heat cooking. Further, many hail the oil’s skin care and medicinal value; it’s said to have anti-aging properties and to speed up the healing of cuts and scratches. —Eva Meszaros
