Border-Crossing Hot Dogs
Oscar Mayer never had this in mind.
user ratingWhoever said hot dogs had to be accompanied solely by mustard or ketchup must have never heard of a Sonoran-style dog. This wiener is generously wrapped in bacon and doused in condiments such as guacamole puree, salsa verde, jalapeno sauce and sour cream then topped with crumbled chorizo, onions and tomatoes before being stuffed into a bolillo bun, a warm split Mexican roll with enclosed sides that resembles a football.
These dogs, originally hailing from Sonora, a northwestern state in Mexico, have become common in Tucson, Arizona, where hundreds of vendors known as hotdoguegros peddle these ethnic fast-food culinary gems. At some stands, a bacon-wrapped dog with the works also comes with a pile of beans, grilled onions, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, jalapeno sauce, guacamole, radishes, cucumbers, whole chilies and mushrooms. Crushed potato chips are even pushing their way in as a topping.–Nicole Denis
