A diet rich in beans and cassava.

Burundi, a small country in Central Africa, offers a cuisine that is emblematic of Africa’s general food culture. The widespread agriculture helps provide the people with an abundance of corn, plantains, sweet potatoes, cassava and beans. In fact, beans are considered the staple of Burundian cuisine, especially red kidney beans. They are the basis for many traditional dishes, such as bean soup, beans with coconut, beans with cassava and beans with bananas (the local fruit). Beans are the primary source of protein in the Burundi diet, since meat is a rare commodity. As a snack food or side dish, Burundians enjoy ugali, a porridge-like paste made from boiling cassava.

Burundians don't eat dessert after their meals, but the main course often has a sweet taste from bananas or peanut sauce. The customary Burundi drink is a homemade banana wine called urwarwa. Beer, coffee and tea are also quite popular. —Alexandra Menglide
