Russian Caviar Vending Machines
Plus caviar meets bacon, stateside.
user ratingVending machines are typically filled with soda or candy bars, but in Moscow they’ve moved in a new resident—caviar. More than 40 vending machines that dispense tins and glass jars of red salmon caviar and roe for anywhere between $5 and $21 have been installed in various government offices and upscale venues. Although not top-of-the-line sturgeon—hey, this is a vending machine—caviar lovers can choose these less-expensive varieties, which are traditionally spread on buttered bread.
Stateside, Americans' love affair with bacon has even influenced caviar production. Introducing Bacon & Eggs Caviar ($15/1-ounce tin) from California Caviar Company, which sells high-grade caviar, like California White Sturgeon and Jacque Pepin Pressed Caviar. The producers infuse trout roe with bacon to create a snack that will remind you of lox, making it the ideal accompaniment to a bagel and cream cheese. Or go for the Bacon & Eggs Special: 2 ounces of bacon-infused trout roe, 4 ounces of smoked salmon, bagel crisps and a mother of pearl spoon ($38). These masters of infusing caviar also offer Bourbon Trout Roe, Sake Trout Roe, Truffle Whitefish Roe, Saffron Whitefish Roe, and Lemongrass Whitefish Roe. —Denise Shoukas
