Corn-Based Vodka
Indiana’s new local spirit uses the state’s bountiful harvest.
user ratingIndiana’s new homegrown cocktail is vodka. Vodka made from corn, that is.
Heartland Distillers, Indiana’s first new distillery since Prohibition, uses local produce to make its high-end spirit. The distiller’s founder and president Stuart Hobson has taken the Hoosier state’s bountiful harvest and created Indiana Vodka—a made-from-corn, 80-proof spirit that is produced in small batches in copper stills, cold filtered and hand bottled.
Indiana Vodka is light, easy-to-drink and has no burn on the way down. It pairs well with vodka-based pasta sauces as well as caviar. With a sweet creamed corn flavor that other vodkas lack, Indiana Vodka can be used as an ingredient to flambé vegetables such as sautéed corn with a touch of cream.
Heartland Distillers is also in the process of creating Prohibition Gin, which it expects to have available at the end of November. Future plans for the distiller include a line of local bourbon spirits and possibly flavored vodkas using local and regional fruits such as Michigan cherries.
Indiana Vodka can currently be found in more than 400 retail outlets around the state of Indiana. For a list of retailers and restaurants, visit www.heartlandistillers.com. –Nicole Denis
