Cookie 2010

Effie's Homemade, LLC - Effie's Oatcakes
user rating
4.0 out of 5 stars(1)

sofi Gold Winner 2010
Outstanding Cookie

“Simple” is the word Joan MacIsaac, founder of Effie’s Homemade, uses to describe her product. Introduced in 2008, Effie’s Oatcakes are based on an old recipe and made with wheat flour, rolled oats, butter and a few other ingredients.

MacIsaac founded the Hyde Park, Mass. company with her friend, Irene Costello. Effie MacLelland, Joan’s mother, inspired the two friends with her farmhouse recipes from Nova Scotia, and MacIsaac also draws on her own experience in the catering business. The resulting oatcakes confirm the company’s success in bringing old-fashioned back into fashion.

Falling somewhere between a cracker and a cookie, the oatcakes satisfy both sweet and salty cravings. The nutty flavor and crispy texture make them delicious, while the local and all-natural ingredients make them healthful. The company also uses eco-friendly and recyclable packaging.

The versatile oatcakes can be served with cheese, tea, wine, whiskey, preserves or just about anything because of the balanced flavor profile that lends itself to pairing. MacIsaac recommends making “a gourmet s’more,” using the oatcakes, marshmallows and chocolate-covered coffee beans.

Other products include Effie’s Corncakes and the recently launched Pecan Nut Cake. A new product line is currently in the works. —Alex Menglide
