Farmers and Schools Unite with Food Program
No more mystery meat.
user ratingIt was distressing to read about the recall of 143 million pounds of beef from Westland/Hallmark earlier this year, but finding out that much of that meat ended up in school cafeterias was downright scary. At least it shed light on innovative initiatives like The National Farm to School Network, which helps bring local farms and schools together, making it possible to know exactly where the food being fed to school children has come from. Using school funds to buy fresh, healthy foods from local trustworthy sources seems to be the wave of the future. With more than 1,000 programs in 38 states, the farm-to-school approach proves that providing nutritious, healthy food for children, while connecting them with where food comes from, is a viable option.
