Outstanding Classic
Fitting for an Outstanding Classic, every item in the Mom’s line of Italian sauces and soups—including this year’s sofi™ Gold Winner, Mom’s Spaghetti Sauce—focuses on traditional and quality ingredients rather than modern flavor trends.
For example, the recipe for Mom’s Spaghetti Sauce “was based on a time-honored Sicilian family recipe that was passed down from generation to generation,” explains Jonathan Pehl, director of marketing for Fischer & Wieser, the Fredericksburg, Texas-based company that purchased the Mom’s line in 2001. (It was first introduced in 1986.) What makes the sauce so special, Pehl notes, is its simplicity. “You can look at the base ingredients and immediately see that they work perfectly together: whole cloves of garlic, whole basil leaves, Sicilian extra virgin olive oil and premium tomatoes.” Also of note, Pehl adds, “It’s the only jarred pasta sauce on the market that uses whole garlic cloves.”
The recipe was originally adopted from the grandmother of Patrick Timpone, founder of the Mom’s brand. In fact, Timpone’s mother Nenfa, who passed down the family recipe to her son, still graces the label of all the Mom’s products. Pehl says that many new pasta sauce introductions tend to deviate from traditional flavors but with Mom’s Spaghetti Sauce, “you get back to what you enjoy; the simple classic things that you grew up with.” As is the case in Italy, Pehl says, “it’s these simple and quality ingredients that make everything so delicious.” —Dennis Marrero
