Food Truck Takes to the Seas
Bringing the meaning of ice-cream float to another level.
user ratingBecause food trucks have already conquered city streets nearly everywhere, one ice-cream truck has gone amphibious, making its rounds along the Great Britain coast. The HMS Flake 99, which touts a “license to chill,” is an ice-cream truck that drives into the water and motors along to offer cool treats to beach goers on Britain’s beaches and crew members on passing vessels. It was created as part of a backlash against some municipalities in Britain banning ice-cream trucks because of noise pollution and concerns about childhood obesity. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Created by Fredericks, the makers of Cadbury Ice Cream, the bobbing truck made its debut in Britain but plans include a tour to Venice next year. Interested in finding out how they built the world’s first ice-cream boat-truck? Check out this YouTube video. The ice-cream man explains the truck’s creation and the vehicle’s “sea trials” and likens the final model to an amphibious Lamborghini.—Denise Shoukas
