Child Nutrition Act Gets Signed into Law

Squeezing in at the tail-end of 2010—and a fitting send-off to a big year in food—is the passing of the much-anticipated Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. President Obama signed the bill into law on December 13, making a significant stride in the renovation of the nutrition landscape in schools across the country.

Much to the enthusiasm of First Lady Michelle Obama, who has made improving children’s health her own top priority, the law will enact a laundry list of changes both small and significant, with the goals of increasing access to healthy food, reducing childhood obesity and maintaining accountability. Among them, as detailed in the Child Nutrition Fact Sheet:

  • Giving the USDA the authority to set nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in schools, including vending machines, lunch lines and school stores
  • Providing additional funding to schools that meet updated nutritional standards
  • Expanding access to drinking water in schools
  • Increasing the number of eligible children enrolled in school meal programs, and taking measures to allow more universal meal access for students in high-poverty communities
  • Requiring school districts to be audited every three years to improve compliance with nutritional standards

The law holds schools highly accountable in the effort to revive a nation failing in health. Though a timeline for implementation hasn’t yet been detailed, the sweeping changes will be palpable, and not a moment too soon.
