It’s not an easy task to strike sofi™ Gold on the first try, but G.S. Gelato & Desserts Inc. has done just that with its Blood Orange Sorbetto. With the help of premium blood oranges, its award-winning sorbet combines indulgence and health in a smooth and creamy 100 percent fat-, dairy-, gluten-, wheat- and sodium-free treat. Jeff McAlum, marketing coordinator, says most people who try the product cannot believe that it is made of a simple combination of fresh fruit and filtered water.

Although G.S. Gelato & Desserts carries a selection of more than 100 flavors of artisinal gelato and sorbet, McAlum notes that the blood orange is “by far the most popular flavor.” The secret behind its distinctive taste, he explains, is that it is made with arancia rossa, a type of blood orange known for its deep red color and pure orange flavor that can only be grown in the Sicilian provinces of Catania, Enna Siracusa and Ragusa. In addition to the blood oranges, McAlum points out that 80 percent of the ingredients used in all of the products are sourced from Italy.

This dedication to traditional Italian production of gelatos and sorbets originates with the company’s founders, husband and wife Guido Tremolini and Simona Faroni. Moving from northern Italy to Florida’s Emerald Coast in the mid-1990s, the pair was determined to bring authentic Italian gelato to America. Blood oranges—Arancia Rossa—are a Sicilian staple and the exclusive fruit can only carry such a name if grown under “Indicazione Geografica Protetta” in the Italian provinces of Catania, Enna Siracusa and Ragusa. The unique oranges create a sorbetto with an incredibly smooth texture and pure orange flavor.
