Grenada
Spice up your meals on "The Isle of Spice."
user ratingThe Caribbean country of Grenada lives up to its name as the "Isle of Spice" with locally grown flavors such as nutmeg, vanilla, ginger, hot peppers, allspice and garlic.
"Oildown" is a national dish comprising salted meat, the root vegetable dasheen and dumplings, all seasoned and steamed in coconut milk. Crab with the leafy green vegetable callaloo is another popular meal, as is barbeque chicken, the flavorful pepper pot and a wide range of local seafood such as lobster, conch and flying fish. For the more adventurous diner, the country offers manicou, also known as possum, pickled pig or Grenadian caviar, the roe of white sea urchin.
Desserts include nutmeg ice cream and spiced candies. Rum, of course, is common throughout the Caribbean; local distillery Clarke’s Court Special Dark is used in fruit punch. Carib is a local beer.—Leska Tomash
