Sweets with Something Extra
Getting the cooking method perfected is the key to some of this season’s more innovative baked creations. Marsha Pener Johnston spent two years in her kitchen perfecting Browniepops™ (browniepops.com), a golf-ball–size combination of fudgey brownie interior with a crisp, chocolate-dipped exterior, fastened to a stick like a lollipop. Five years later, Browniepops are now sold in shops across the U.S. (and online). They come in 11 mouth-watering flavors, such as Chocolate Malted, Toffee and Mocha, and are decorated with seasonal designs, including snowflakes and Santa hats and colors for Christmas and Hanukkah.
"We make every one of them from scratch," notes Johnston, "with 62 percent American chocolate, butter, sugar, flour and eggs. We hand-roll, hand-dip and hand-paint them, and police each other's work so they all look perfect."
Browniepops is a mom-and-mom operation, with Johnston's mother and two daughters contributing, and sculpture and art majors from the local college rounding out the team. "One of them told me it was like playing in Play-Doh every day of her life," Johnston says.

6. Boca Bons
Boca Bons (bocabons.com), a Greenacres, Fla.-based company, offers original creations, such as a super-rich combination of truffle, fudge and brownie in one bite. Susan Kanter, president and founder of Boca Bons, was once a clothing designer in New York City's garment district and uses her sense of style to give these bite-size sweets extra flair by packaging them in tiny, fashionable cookie boxes, such as a purse-like Cookie Clutch for the sweet tooth on the go.
This holiday season Boca Bons is rolling out a new concept: Cookies with Character™. An Oreo-style cookie is covered in an extra layer of milk, dark or white chocolate, sprinkled with nonpareils or sugar crystals, then adorned with little characters hand-drawn with royal icing."We've got Santas, poinsettias, candles, gingerbread men, toy soldiers and Christmas stockings," Kanter shares. "I love Oreos and had been thinking of coming out with something new for a while, waiting for a great idea to come along." The debut of Cookies with Character was a hit at NASFT’s New York's Summer Fancy Food Show, which Kanter credits to their sparkle and sense of whimsy. The cookies are sold in three-, six- or nine-piece packs.
7. Late July’s Organic Sandwich Cookies
It’s the ingredients more than the looks that set apart Late July’s Organic Sandwich Cookies (shoplatejuly.com). The limited-edition holiday cookies, for instance, contain green tea extract in the filling, providing healthy antioxidants. The cookies are covered in organic dark or milk chocolate and sprinkled with organic peppermint candy cane pieces. To top it off, they’re also vegan and kosher friendly. Order online or punch in your zip code to find stores in your area, including Dean & Deluca and The Food Emporium, that carry these cookies.
