Honduran cuisine tends to be fresh, simple and unprocessed yet greatly diverse, drawing from nearby countries Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Mexico. The inland regions of Honduras rely on meats, rice and beans, while coastal areas feature seafood and tropical fruit.

National specialties include tamales and ceviches comprising raw shrimp, conch or other seafood with fresh tomatoes, cilantro, onion and lime juice.

Burritas are flour tortillas filled with shredded meat, avocado, cheese and refried beans, and tostones are crispy deep-fried plantains.

Honduran desserts include arroz con leche, or Honduran rice pudding with cinnamon and warm milk, and popular beverages include beers such as Salva and a spiced, herbed liquor called Garifuna Giffity.—Leska Tomash
