user ratingOutstanding Innovation in Packaging Design or Function 2008: Knipschildt Chocolatier Petit Egg Sampler
In a search for innovative packaging, Fritz Knipschildt, founder of Knipschildt Chocolatier, Norwalk, Ct., came up with a line of natural craft egg cartons and boxes that would complement his handmade, hand-painted chocolate eggs. Petit Egg Sampler was introduced in January 2007 and offers customers four colorful artisan chocolate eggs packaged on a bed of hay in a festive orange or purple egg carton. Petit Egg Sampler is the little sister to the company’s Ensemble of Chocolate Easter Eggs, which offers nine eggs. (Knipschildt also received a 2007 Outstanding Innovation in Packaging Design or Function sofi™ Gold award for his Chocolate Quail Eggs.)
Individually hand-painted with festive spring colors, each egg is “creatively unique,” says Knipschildt, and filled with a variation of delicious ganaches. “The white eggs,” he notes, “are filled with passion fruit ganache so they look like a real egg when you cut them open.” Additionally, milk chocolate eggs have a nougatine ganache while the dark chocolate eggs have a 71 percent dark chocolate ganache.
Part of the company’s holiday Easter line—which also includes Chocolate Egg with Passion Fruit Ganache; Chocolate Quail Eggs; Mini Chocolate Quail Eggs with Nougatine; Five a Side Chocolate Eggs and Carousal of Chocolate Eggs—the Petit Sampler sells itself and can fit in any aspect of a retail store, says Knipschildt. Great as a gift alone or as part of a gift basket, Petit Egg Sampler has a four-month shelf-life and is a fan favorite of “sophisticated adults,” he comments. Suggested retail: $18.Contact: Fritz Knipschildt, Knipschildt Chocolatier, 203.838.3131; fritz@knipschildt.com; knipschildt.com.—Nicole Potenza Denis
