Introducing Puerh Tea from Numi Organic
Antioxidant-rich tea leaves from China.
user ratingIn the U.S., little known Puerh tea has only been available (usually in traditional compressed cakes or bricks) in Chinatown shops or a handful of tea boutiques. But Numi Organic Tea’s new Puerh Tea line, has given the tea a wider audience.
Puerh is a family of tea made from larger-than-average tea leaves grown in China’s Yunnan Mountain region. Traditional Puerh can range in taste from something like hay to super sweet and malty, which prompted Numi’s owners, siblings Reem and Ahmed Rahim, to create four special blends, sourced directly from the gardens in Yunnan. They added various flowers in order to give their teas a soothing, well-rounded clean taste that is never bitter. The two Green Puerh blends are floral Magnolia and Mint, which has just a hint of Moroccan mint. For a stronger taste, Numi created two Black Puerh blends, Chocolate, which has a faint vanilla undertone, and the subtle, malty Emperor’s Puerh.
Puerh is known to have exceptional health benefits. Reem notes the line has 32 percent more antioxidants than green tea, and reportedly can aid digestion, break down fat, give energy and lower cholesterol. A box of 16 certified-organic Numi Puerh teabags can be bought in specialty food stores across the country, including Whole Foods Markets, for about $9 to $10. They are also available at numitea.com. –Nina Roberts
