Outstanding Jam, Preserve, Honey or Nut Butter 2009: Magnolia Honey Jelly Raspberry William

In 2003, Shan Miller launched Magnolia Honey Company, a line of products sweetened entirely with honey. As an alternative to refined sugars, artificial colors and preservatives, Magnolia Honey Company uses healthful honey that comes from bees bred in Wilkinson County, Miss. Aside from taste, the honey offers a natural source of energy, antioxidants and antibacterial properties to benefit the immune system.

The all-natural products range from Honey Jellies and Honey Pickles to Honey Chocolate and Honey Jezebel sauce. Raspberry William, named after Miller’s son, was the original honey jelly flavor. The combination of a handed-down recipe and a stovetop kettle led to Miller’s creation of this and nine other distinctive honey-jelly flavors, such as Sunrise Orange and Michael’s Hot Pepper. The jellies are perfect complements to hot biscuits and scones, and also work well when served with cheese and crackers. Miller recommends melting Raspberry William with butter and seasonings, and using the mixture as a sauce for fowl and meat. “One of my favorite things to do is add balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic and chopped walnuts to make a quick and easy raspberry vinaigrette,” she suggests. “Some people like to spread Raspberry William on top of cheesecake, mix it in with ice cream, or stir it in tea,” adds Miller.

The gourmet jellies, pickles and sauces make ideal gifts, especially during the holiday season. Magnolia Honey Company offers many gift options, including assorted cases, baskets and organza-wrapped jars. The products are available in 8-ounce jars, as well as mini 1.8-ounce jars. Suggested retail price: $6.50/8-ounce. magnoliahoney.com.–A. Menglide
