Japan's Upscale and Coveted Kit Kat Bars

A Clever Way to Say “Wish You Were Here”

Next time you’re in Japan, don’t send a touristy postcard home. Go to the closest post office and buy Kit Kat Mail, boxes designed by the Japan Post and Kit Kat® that can be sent anywhere in the world. One side of the box has a blank space for a message and inside slips one of the new Japanese-inspired Kit Kat bars. And these aren’t your run-of-the-mill chocolate bars. Joining the staple flavors, such as miso, soy sauce and green tea, are 19 new flavors. Each one reflects specialties from regions across Japan, ranging from baked corn from Hokkaido Island, to yuzu fruit and red potatoes from Kyushu Island to sweet potato, blueberry and kinako (soybean) flavors from the Kanto region. Some are only sold in the region for which they were created, a clever way to turn these limited-edition Kit Kat packages into coveted souvenirs. Alas, they’re only available in Japan, but they’ll make great gifts to send home.—Denise Shoukas
