Kefir: The New Frozen Yogurt

Fermented milk was never this good for you.

The resurgence of frozen yogurt (illustrated by the number of Pinkberry shops popping up nationwide) has given kefir—a healthful fermented milk drink that originated in the Caucasus region—its chance in the spotlight. The first kefir boutique has opened in Chicago. Starfruit offers several flavors of frozen kefir with 20-plus toppings and customized kefir parfaits, and smoothie-style kefir drinks.

Why stray from typical frozen yogurt? Kefir’s benefits include ten live and active probiotic cultures that have been shown in various studies to enhance the immune system, fight fatigue, promote gastrointestinal health, aid in vitamin and mineral absorption, and eases lactose intolerance. Frozen yogurt, which has a similar taste and texture to kefir, does not rely on live and active cultures cultivation and contains closer to two or three of these cultures. —Denise Shoukas
