K.F. Seetoh
Singapore's Street Food Guru
user ratingSingapore has been garnering a lot of food buzz lately given its vibrant food culture and rich, ethnic ancestry. One of the country’s best known local foodies is K.F. Seetoh, the creator and author of the Makansutra guidebooks (similar to Zagat) in Asia. In his native Singapore, Seetoh is hailed as the Street Food Guru. He gained recognition among American audiences from his stint as a guest judge in the spring 2010 finale of Top Chef, as well as from his appearances on The Martha Stewart Show and Samantha Brown’s Passport to Asia series on the Travel Channel.
His path to becoming the resident street food or “hawker” guru is an unusual one. Seetoh does not have any professional culinary training—he is self-taught. He began his career as a photojournalist, but always loved eating, taking pictures and telling stories about food. He eventually decided to combine his career with his passion, and the Makansutra books were born in 1997. In addition to Singapore, Makansutra books are now available in Malaysia, Indonesia and China, with plans for editions in Thailand, Hong Kong and Vietnam. All the meanwhile, Seetoh travels throughout Singapore, helping to establish food courts and restaurants, and around the world to promote the Asian food culture and lifestyle.
