Mayotte
From rich desserts to exotic entrées.
user ratingMayotte is a French territory located in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique. Over the years, the islands have absorbed the cooking methods and traditions of Creole, Indian, Arabic and French cultures—resulting in a tasty cuisine enhanced with an array of spices and exotic flavors.
On the islands, seafood is plentiful, from smoked swordfish to prawns and crab. One of the most traditional dishes is fish cooked in coconut milk. Other specialties include sambos (pastries filled with beef and spices), chicken curry and bean and squash soup. Fried plantains and manioc are typical side dishes, served with chicken, goat or mutton.
The main religion of Mayotte is Islam, which limits the availability of alcohol. The rich desserts are limitless though, including a mouthwatering selection of tropical fruit such as mangoes, sour apples and guava. Other locally prepared treats are baked bananas sprinkled with rum and oubou (sweetened manioc paste).—Alexandra Menglide
