Melilla
The best of both worlds.
user ratingMelilla’s cuisine is the distinct product of its location and cultural diversity. Located on the Moroccan coast, the country’s food is a blend of Spanish, African and Mediterranean flavors. The coastal location offers not only beautiful scenery but also an array of fresh seafood. As an autonomous city of Spain, Melilla features many foods that are typical of the country such as various types of tapas and paella. African influences include lamb kebabs and couscous, while the exotic spices and saffron rice are unmistakable Middle Eastern contributions.
Indian food also has a presence in Melilla, evidenced by the popular samosas, which are traditional fried triangular pastries, usually stuffed with spiced potatoes and chickpeas. The small Jewish population of Melilla prepares dishes such as cocho—small pieces of fish seasoned and cooked with tomatoes and peppers. One of the country’s signature dishes is a stew made with Hebrew biscuits, Moroccan peppers and carrots, Indian spices and tongue—an eclectic mixture that reflects the multicultural society.
In Melilla, the customary drink is mint tea, which is often accompanied by delicious pastries, a legacy from the Arabs.
