Culinary highlights from Montréal

Canadian trend watcher Dana McCauley shares what’s new in the Montréal's food scene.

Food is everywhere in Montréal. Innovation in the restaurant scene is bookended by established chefs: Normand Laprise of Toque serves distinct interpretations of French classics and Martin Picard’s Au Pied du Cochon menu epitomizes rustic indulgences with plenty of pig’s trotters and foie gras. Revitalization in the downtown core is changing the city’s food map significantly. Restaurants like Newtown have attracted notable talent such as Marc-André Jetté and Pastry Chef Patrice Demersthe (both formerly of Laloux Bistro) to Montreal’s vibrant Crescent Street bar district. Hidden Market is another hot eatery, where reservations can be made only online and once confirmed, the diner is told the location of the restaurant one day before the meal. Popular retail stores include La Maison du Cheddar, which offers local and international artisan cheese, as well as fresh daily cheese curds; La Maison du Macaron, which specializes in macaroons; and Le Boutique Point G, which offers ice creams flavored with foie gras, pineapple and basil. –Dana McCauly and Vanessa Facenda
