Nepal

Cows are holy, but Nepal offers plenty of savory non-beef dishes.

Wedged and landlocked between India and China’s Xizang’s Autonomous Region (Tibet), Nepal is unsurprisingly influenced food-wise by its neighbors.

The Nepalese dish “dhal, bhat and tarkari” comprises lentils, rice and vegetable curry and reflects Indian cuisine while momos, vegetable or meat dumplings, are similar to Chinese pot stickers. In the Everest region, the Sherpa dish rikikul, or potato pancakes, are commonly enjoyed right off the griddle and topped with yak butter or cheese.

As cows are holy in Nepal, beef will not be found but a chicken soup called thupka is available along with masu, a meat dish with a spicy gravy and rice.

Popular drinks include lassi made with yoghurt and water and unique desserts are available such as juju dhau, a rich creamy buffalo curd.
