A musician and an actor have teamed to amp up the flavors of what they decided had become a boring condiment—salsa.

Rob Bowman, a musician who plays under the name The Blue and Red 3D Spectacular, and boasts live electronics, drum smashing and 3-D visuals at his shows, and Matt Burns, a professional television, film and theater actor who has appeared on Law & Order and Gossip Girl, launched The Brooklyn Salsa Company in their loft kitchen in 2008.

Their five salsa creations each exemplify a borough of New York—a place where cultures, flavors and unique lifestyles come together with more potency than anywhere in America, says Burns, a self-proclaimed DIY natural food chef whose first job as prep cook at a taqueria in South Dakota helped him develop Brooklyn Salsas’ distinct blends.

NYC Salsas by Borough

The salsas are all natural and made with local and organic ingredients.

Manhattan:
The Pure. Mild and contains organic tomatoes and organic mango, for a sweet kick.

Staten Island:
The Green. Made with green and purple tomatillos and organic mango. Lime juice gives it its vibrancy while hints of ginger and cumin mix with sesame seeds.

Queens:
The Tropical. Organic pineapple, oranges, lime juice and coconut milk make up the flavors.

The Bronx:
The Curry. Spicy, hot and made with organic eggplant, organic tomatoes, bell peppers and a hint of coconut milk.

Brooklyn:
The Hot. For heat seekers, the company’s top seller is a mango-infused red salsa with scotch bonnet chilies and heirloom tomatoes.

The company has teamed up with urban gardeners, targeting rooftops for ingredients such as cilantro and other organic produce, and local farmers within a 40-mile-or-less radius of New York City. They also have a relationship with the Brooklyn Queens Land Trust, a cooperative of community gardens, for produce and educational outreach, and with Yards to Gardens to link urban gardeners and people with unused growing space.

Since its inception, salsa production has moved from the home kitchen to Glen Industries, a company in Watkins Glen, N.Y., that employs an inspiring team of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Not just for chips, the salsas can be mixed in with burgers or even used to top pizza. Jars retail for $5.99 each. Order online at bksalsa.com. –Nicole Potenza Denis
