Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company - Point Reyes Original Blue Cheese

2011 Gold Award Winner: Outstanding Cheese or Dairy Product

5.0 out of 5 stars(1)

The Giacomini family has a long history of producing top-notch foods, from the mountains of Italy more than a century ago to its traditional Point Reyes dairy farm in the U.S. today. The family continues to live up to its high standards thanks to sofi Gold Winner Original Blue.

Bob Giacomini has been milking cows at Point Reyes since 1959. Today, his wife and four grown daughters run the Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company in Northern California, started in August 2000, when the family produced its first vat of Original Blue.

“We definitely have an edge on quality because we produce our own milk,” says Bob’s daughter Jill Giacomini Basch. “We have total control over the raw ingredient, thus giving us better control over the finished product.”

Basch describes the Original Blue as distinctively creamy, almost butter-like, with a medium-to-strong pungency. “Our cheese is made only from the Grade A cow’s milk that comes from our own herd of Holsteins, raised on our family farm,” Basch says. “It is a true Farmstead cheese.”

Original Blue is available in sizes from 6-ounce wedges to a 6-pound wheel. It also comes in a ready-to-serve Dip & Dressing package, and packed with other Point Reyes products in Farm Fresh and Blue to Go gift packs.

The Original Blue makers have even gone green by way of a methane digester, which converts the dairy byproduct (methane gas) into energy to power the Point Reyes Farmstead milking parlor and cheese plant. —Eva Meszaros
