Cuisine for the adventurous: hedgehog curry and wasp larvae.

Located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, the island of Rèunion is an overseas territory of France. The fare blends influences of China, India, France and Africa. Cari, or curry, is a regional Creole specialty comprising seafood (octopus or eel) or meat (duck) simmered with garlic, turmeric, ginger, tomatoes and cloves, served with boiled rice. For the adventurous, there is hedgehog cari, and for the very adventurous, the delicacy of wasp larvae served in a spiced tomato sauce called rougail.

Cassava cake and Gâteau patate made with sweet potatoes are popular desserts. National drinks include rhum arrangé—a white rum flavored with vanilla, cinnamon and orchids—and the local beer called Bourbon after the original name of the island.—Leska Tomash
