Meet the Producer: Jim Gordon
Robert Rothschild Farms, Urbana, Ohio
user ratingRobert Rothschild Farms began in 1976, when Bob and Sara Rothschild moved from San Francisco to Ohio to start their new family business of growing raspberries. Their first product was Raspberry Preserves—they made 100 cases’ worth—and presented it at the 1984 Fancy Food Show in New York City. Today Robert Rothschild Farm continues to create award-winning specialty foods including preserves, mustards, dips, sauces and sweet toppings.
Recognized for careful crafting and bold flavors, the spreads and condiments are produced in small batches on the 170-acre working raspberry farm. Jim Gordon, president and CEO, who came on board in 2009, leads the company in making its specialty line. —Denise Shoukas
Gordon shared his story with us:
How has the company changed most since it began?
In the past, we had a narrow focus and limited distribution. Today we have a broad range of products that appeal to a variety of people. And we can now be found in national and international retail stores, making it easier for our consumers to find us.
What is the most satisfying and/or challenging part of your job?
Managing our continual growth is a highlight of working at Robert Rothschild Farm. We are always seeking our next opportunity. Throughout the changing environment, we continue to develop and produce quality products that our consumers enjoy.
Do you have a favorite product and how do you use it?
One of my favorites is the Pineapple Coconut Mango Tequila Sauce. It can be used in many ways, plus it is low in sodium. Our products address many diet requirements and choices—within our product line we have gluten free, all natural and kosher.
If someone could shadow you for one day at your job, what would surprise that person most?
I am actively involved in all aspects of the business. I participate in the tasting of new products, oversee manufacturing and have the vision for the future of the company.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I have always wanted to run my own business and Robert Rothschild Farm has given me this opportunity.
Aside from your products, what three items can you always find in your kitchen?
Red or white wine, gourmet cheeses and a variety of meats or seafood.
