Neighbor to Bulgaria and Ukraine, home to the Transylvanian Alps and the Danube River as it flows into the Black Sea, Romania has a food culture as rich and intriguing as its geography and history.

Traditional dishes include pickled cabbage leaves filled with minced meat, spices and rice known as sarmale; ciorba de perisoare or meatball soup; rabbit stew simmered with red wine; wild boar or deer steak; and polenta with locally foraged mushrooms.

Sweet cheesecake called pasca is popular along with cottage cheese doughnuts served with fruit preserves and sour cream. Romanian drinks include tuica, a strong plum brandy, local beers such as Kaiser and Silva and wines from varying regions of Romania, a major wine producer.—Leska Tomash
