Somalia
Traditional meat dishes, from camel to goat.
user ratingLocated on the Somali Peninsula, or the Horn of Africa, Somalia has access to fresh fish and seafood. However, meat plays more prominently in traditional fare. Beef in cumin sauce uses the flavors of lemon, mint, garlic, vinegar and tomato. Coupé-Coupé is barbequed beef seasoned with a cayenne pepper sauce. Camel meat is eaten for special occasions and the camel’s hump is considered a delicacy. Goat is often fried in ghee and spiced with coriander, turmeric and curry, served with basmati rice. Sambusas are deep-fried meat or vegetable dumplings.
Because Muslim religion forbids consumption of alcohol, common beverages include black tea with milk, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves, and Kahawa, or coffee flavored with ginger and cardamom. Desserts are not a regular part of the Somali diet, but milk pie is a healthy sweet made with almond extract, eggs and cinnamon. Carrot-oatmeal cookies are another popular choice.—Leska Tomash
