For years Source Atlantique has been creating eco-friendly items for its If You Care line, such as non-bleached paper products and aluminum foil made from 100 percent recycled aluminum. “Eventually, we realized there were many other environmental and social issues that needed to be addressed with premium products,” says Joel Schuman, president.

One such product was eco-friendly Firelighters that could be used as an alternative to kerosene (which is made from fossil fuels, is toxic and potentially dangerous to use). Source Atlantique created non-toxic wood chips that can be safely stored near or with food. “It’s the first product we launched that features FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood. We know the wood comes from sustainably managed forests,” Schuman explains. “Three or four will start a fire. They burn for eight to ten minutes, are very effective and carbon neutral.”

Other products in the eco-friendly line include household gloves (made from FSC-certified ethically sourced latex), all-natural waxed paper (made out of 100% soybean wax), cheesecloth (made with unbleached cotton) and paper sandwich bags (that are chlorine-free). —Debra Moss
