Spain’s geographical variations combine with its distinct regions such as La Rioja, Catalonia and Basque country to create a widely diverse cuisine.

Regional specialties include Idiazabal cheese and txakoli sparkling white wine from the Basque country. Paella, although many seafood variants are found throughout Spain, is originally a Valencian dish made by simmering rice and saffron with duck, rabbit, chicken and snails. Gazpacho comes from this area as well. Tapas can be enjoyed in all Spanish regions with components ranging from cheeses, dips and vegetables to fish and pastries. Jamon Serrano, olive oil and garlic are other widely used and enjoyed elements of Spanish cuisine.

Spain’s varied terrain is perfect for vineyards and the country produces world-famous wines from regions such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Spain is home to rich, dark coffee, sangria and horchata, a non-alcoholic drink made with almonds, sesame seeds, milk, cinnamon and vanilla.
