Sri Lanka
A flavorful cuisine mingling curries, rice, seafood and meat.
user rating On this Buddhist island country in the Indian Ocean, customary meals mingle a rich mixture of flavorful curries, rice, seafood and meat. A variety of chutneys, salads and pappadam—a crispy flatbread made with lentil flour—accompany the spicy dishes. Also eaten with curries is mallung, a dish of dried shrimps, shredded green vegetables, spices and coconut.
Hoppers, a popular breakfast item, are bowl-shaped pancakes served steaming and filled with sambols and curries.
Fruit abounds in this tropical region with such delicacies as plantains, mangoes, durian, rambutan and papaya.
Tea is a popular beverage to be enjoyed with milk and sugar, “plain”(sugar but no milk) or flavored with crushed ginger. Coffee, carbonated sodas and cold drinks made with fresh fruit are widespread. For those who desire a more intoxicating beverage, Sri Lanka is home to Toddy, a drink made from palm trees, and Arrack, a fermented and refined version of Toddy.—Leska Tomash
