Sunflower Butter Cups
Allergen-free for anyone with nut or gluten intolerances.
user ratingSimilar to peanut butter cups, Sun Cups are made with sunflower butter and gluten-free chocolate, safe for anyone with nut or gluten allergies. They were created by Boulder, Colo.-based Seth Ellis Chocolatier, a dedicated gluten- and nut-free facility that is also organic, Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance Certified. Its cacao comes from farms helping to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods for farmers and families in cacao-growing communities.
Sun Cups are made with organic sunflower butter from SunGold Foods in Fargo, North Dakota, and Fairly Traded cocoa from Ecuador. Available in milk or dark chocolate, Sun Cups have a crunchy, salty texture from bits of flaky sea salt added to the recipe. To keep the company’s carbon footprint small, Sun Cup’s wrapper is home compostable and will disappear in 35 days.
Sun Cups are available at Whole Foods Markets and online at peanutfreeplanet.com, amazon.com and foodzie.com. They retail for about $1.99 for a two-pack. Rick Levine, who develops all the recipes for Seth Ellis, founded the company with his brother Neil and friend David Lurie in 2006. The chocolatier also makes high-end, gluten-free European-style truffles and will be expanding its nut and gluten-free cup line to include Caramel cups and Mint Cups. —Nicole Denis
