Superfood Your Snacks
Omega-3 packed chips and salsa.
user ratingThanks to the addition of salba, a nutrient-packed superfood grain grown only in Peru, chips and salsa are getting healthier. The makers of Salba Smart have incorporated the organic salba seed in each product in its line, including chips, medium, mild or hot salsa, pretzels and whole wheat tortilla chips. A nutrient-packed whole grain, salba is a rich whole food source of Omega-3 fatty acids and fiber.
Paired with tortilla chips, Salba Salsa is a ‘superfoodie” snack. The company also claims it can increase the nutritional content of meals when paired with fish, chicken, eggs or pasta. Ounce for ounce, the salba grain provides three times more iron than spinach, 15 times more magnesium than broccoli, 25 percent more fiber than flax seeds and six times more calcium than whole milk. Each 1 tablespoon serving of Salba Whole Grain provides more than 2,700 mg of Omega-3s and more than 4,500 mg of dietary fiber. Twelve Salba Tortilla Chips, for example, provides 300-mg of Omega-3s.
All of Salba Smart’s products are gluten-free (except the tortillas and pretzels) and certified non GMO. Aside from its salba-filled products, the company also offers whole grain and ground salba to add to everyday foods such as cereal or smoothies. Ground salba can also be used in sauces as a thickener and can be used to nutritionally enhance muffins, breads and meatloaf. Check out the company’s website for more nutritious recipes. Salba Smart can be found at Whole Foods Market, Wild Oats, Vitamin Cottage, Wegman’s and other natural foods stores.—Nicole Potenza Denis
