Sweet
Superfruit Spreads
Jams based on high-antioxidant fruits from four continents.
user ratingMy morning breakfast shifted from an English Muffin to a Super Muffin recently when I topped it with Crofter’s Organic’s Superfruit Spreads ($4.99/11-ounce jar), made with organic superfruits known to have high antioxidant content. Each of the four jams uses a combination of local superfruits from four continents (Asia, South America, Europe and North America), with each spread including a base of Morello Cherries and Red Grapes. Crofter’s has an in-house laboratory that tests each batch for antioxidants, ensuring that every jar of Super Fruit Spread has about as much antioxidant activity as 1 liter of red wine. They’ve succeeded in creating a line of sweet spreads using 1/3 less sugar than jam (it’s Fair Trade to boot).
Start by choosing a continent. Asia was my first stop—a combination of Raspberries and Yumberries (a little bit like a raspberry with a sweet-sour flavor similar to cranberry and pomegranate juice). The Yumberry gives this spread a wonderfully balanced tart-sweet flavor. Or dive into South America for a spread with a deeper color from powerhouse fruits such as maqui and passionfruit. You’ll get the flavors of Europe in a combination of Pomegranate & Black Currant, while North America presents Cranberry & Blueberry. The good news is while they all taste like a treat, they are healthful and can be eaten without judgment.—Denise Shoukas
