In Southwest Asia, Syria borders the Mediterranean Sea, Lebanon and Turkey. Syrian cuisine comprises mezze, or appetizers, with large assortments of tabbouleh, hummus, pita bread, dolmas and baba ghanoush.

Other dishes include kebab, stuffed zucchini and shwarma, a sandwich of shaved lamb, chicken or goat with hummus, tomato and cucumber. In rural areas of Syria, arnab mikli is a popular dish of rabbit meat dredged in flour, pan-fried until browned and served with crispy fried vegetables.

The aniseed-flavored liquor, Arak, is quite popular as is the dessert baklava.
