sofi Gold Winner 2010
Outstanding Pet Product

While birthday cake tends to be a less-than-healthful indulgence, The Lazy Dog Cookie Co. offers a treat that is just as beneficial as it is satisfying. With innovative packaging, soft-baked consistency, creative design and an entertaining name, The Original Happy Birthday Pup-PIE is a distinctive breed of dog food that even humans might find tempting.

The Lazy Dog Cookie Co., launched in 2001 by Amy Augustine, is a hit among pet owners and, of course, their furry friends. Amy began developing her products through research, working with veterinarians and making dog treats for coworkers’ pets. Her husband, Keith, left his job to join her, and gradually the company moved from their kitchen to the garage-turned-bakery to a facility in Ballston Spa, N.Y. This summer, Lazy Dog will move into a bigger, more sustainable facility that uses green design. “In our new location, we plan to open our first Lazy Dog store and also tie-in adoption events,” explains Keith.

The award-winning Original Happy Birthday Pup-PIE offers a 100 percent organic alternative to traditional dog food. It is pre-cut into ten bite-sized slices and topped with naturally colored sesame seeds. “Because of the high-quality ingredients, the pies are not limited to special occasions. They are something you can feed your dog every day,” says Keith. Pup-PIES—which come in a variety of flavors—are wheat-, corn- and soy-free. Alex Menglide
