Disappointed by the quality of food choices available to feed her two-year-old daughter, Chloe, Kari Ani Shiozawa began a mission to make a difference. “Being a first-time mom opened my eyes to all the food out there that is made with chemicals,” she says.
Shiozawa had a professional background in marketing, but had always loved to bake. In 2006, she decided that through baking, she would let her voice be heard. In 2007, she brought to the market five mixes on which her company is currently based: scone, pancake, pizza dough, muffin and her top-seller and 2010 sofi™ Gold Winner, banana bread. “All of our mixes are 100 percent organic, vegan and kosher,” she says. They also contain flax for essential Omega 3s and 6s, one of her product’s main points of distinction.
According to Shiozawa, the banana bread mix—as well as all her mixes—are a blank canvas for the home chef. Consumers can add nuts, chocolate chips or whatever they like to the recipe. The mix requires only eggs, butter and bananas to create moist and healthful banana bread with a nine-day shelf life.
“Organics often get a bad rap for being overpriced and not so tasty.” Just one taste of the banana bread will challenge this preconception about organic baked goods.
