Savannah Bee Company - Tupelo Flute

2011 Gold Award Winner: Outstanding Classic

The elegant, tapered bottle is the first sign that this is no ordinary honey. Beekeeper Ted Dennard’s prized Tupelo, a golden, Southeastern honey variety, shines from the first look to the last spoonful.

“My lifelong love and passion for honey and honeybees was more philosophic than business,” says Dennard, who discovered the intrigue of beekeeping at a young age, keeping his own through high school and college. After traveling the world to experience exotic and unique honeys in New Zealand, Vietnam, France and other locales, Dennard returned to his hometown of Savannah, Ga., to tend to his own bee colonies.

Tupelo comes from White Tupelo trees in the Southeastern swamps. With buttery undertones and a clean finish, this honey never granulates, and the exquisite packaging makes the quality product stand out.

“In hindsight, after 10 years of business, it was a great way to differentiate ourselves from the competition, but back then I didn’t know anything about that,” Dennard explains. “I just wanted the package to tell the story of how good and different this honey was.”

Savannah Bee Company offers Tupelo in 3-, 12-, 20- and 80-ounce sizes, and its other honeys, including Orange Blossom, Sourwood and Black Sage, get the flute treatment to round out the Flute Classic collection. Dennard says the Savannah Bee Company will soon be ready to release a series of new honey products but adds that nothing could ever replace Tupelo. “It is my favorite honey in the world,” he declares.—Eva Meszaros

How to Enjoy It: Use in any recipe that calls for honey, or as a natural sweetener—or just grab a spoon.
