Culinary highlights from Vancouver

Canadian trend watcher Dana McCauley shares what’s new in the Vancouver's food scene.

This city’s food scene is booming, especially since Vancouver was busy preparing for the Winter Olympics. Chefs such as Daniel Boulud and Jean Georges Vongerichten opened DB Bistro Moderne and Market, respectively. Local stars like Indian master Vikram Vij and Japanese perfectionist Tojo, continue to raise the bar in their eponymous, long-operating kitchens. Also popular in Vancouver are izakayas, a type of Japanese pub that serves tapas-style food (known as “japas” in the short-form). Guu Otokomae and Hapa Izakaya are just two of the city’s lively, Japanese small-plate restaurants. The passion for local fare has allowed restaurants like Blue Water and C to prosper by offering only sustainable, seasonal seafood. Vancouver’s specialty food store scene includes Meinhardt’s, Caren McSherry’s Gourmet Warehouse and Edible BC on Granville Island. All offer a wide array of fresh products ranging from artisan cheeses, dry-aged Canadian beef, interesting spices and local specialty foods.
