The cuisine of the South American country Venezuela offers a wide variety of local vegetables, meats, seafood and fruit, resulting in fresh and distinctive fare.

The national dish is pabellon criollo, comprising shredded beef, black beans and cheese served with rice and fried plantain. In addition, arepa is a native bread made from ground corn, fried and filled with varying ingredients such as eggs and tomato, chicken, shrimp, baby shark or sausage. Hallaca is a traditional Christmas and New Year dish made with a medley of chopped meats, garlic, tomatoes, raisins, herbs and spices and then wrapped and steamed in banana leaves.

For sweet delicacies, popular choices are Venezuelan spiced hot chocolate and banana tres leches. Traditional beverages include thick fruit milkshakes called merengada, Polar beer, Cuba Libre (rum and cola) and, of course, Venezuela-grown coffee.—Leska Tomash
